For almost ten years, I worked as a data manager supporting researchers. In particular, I worked for the British Antarctic Survey and the Swiss Polar Institute, with data from research that was done in the Arctic and Antarctic. I have supported several ship-based expeditions as a data manager.
I used tools such as Python, Django, various databases and SQL to wrangle, manage and curate data in a wide variety of formats. As well as making the data easier to work with, describing the data and its collection as part of a metadata record, was important to ensure it could be used again in the future. I also used tools such as Frictionless Data to write machine-readable descriptions of the data, before publishing it.In my work I advocate for open science and open data, following best practise as much as possible to ensure data are reusable in the future. For me, this also includes full reproducibility, making code available, as well as the data with full descriptions.
