I have supported a number of ship-based scientific expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctic.
Arctic Century
Ship-based scientific expedition to the Russian Arctic, 2021.
During the six-week Arctic Century expedition, I worked as a data manager, supporting the work of the scientists on board. As well as recording the track that the ship took, I supported the scientists with backups, compiling records of their samples and data, data descriptions and other data-related queries.
The expedition took us from Murmansk, across the Kara and Laptev Seas in the Russian Arctic. On the way, we visited Franz Josef Land and Severnaya Zemlya. Oceanographers, biologists, atmospheric scientists, geologists, botanists and glaciologists worked en-route and at the islands to collect data for their respective projects.
Our home for the expedition was an icebreaker, the R/V Akademik Tryoshnikov, that we shared with the Russian crew.
Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE)
Ship-based scientific expedition which circumnavigated Antarctica, 2016-2017.
ACE was a multi-disciplinary, international, scientific expedition to the Southern Ocean. I was responsible for managing the data collected during the expedition. To do this, we designed and built a web application using Python and Django. The application was used by scientists on board to register data and sample collection, record the ship's track and manage the data. We also provided and managed data storage whilst on board.
During the three-month circumnavigation of Antarctica, we lived and worked aboard the R/V Akademik Tryoshnikov with around 120 scientists, crew and support staff. The expedition began in Cape Town, South Africa, then travelled to Hobart, Australia and Punta Arenas, Chile.
